I was once a part of BNI, and the group I was in demanded each member came with at least one referral each week. It got creepy to say the least. I eventually dropped our membership because no one should be pressured to make referrals especially to a mechanic you don’t believe in.
If I know that company X does much better work than company Y, but I’m required to refer company Y, then I’ve just crossed an ethical boundary, and that just doesn’t feel right. Or if I know I’m getting a hefty kickback by referring company Y outside of a BNI or LeTip, I just misled someone for my own benefit. It doesn’t feel right, but it’s everywhere, and especially in Nashville.
